English referee Ken Aston came up with yellow and red cards while sitting at a stoplight, after confusion over bookings at the 1966 World Cup. They were introduced at the 1970 tournament and are now used in nearly every sport that needs them.

Germany's Nadine Angerer played all 540 minutes of the 2007 World Cup without conceding a single goal — the first keeper, male or female, to go through an entire World Cup finals unbeaten. She saved a Marta penalty in the final for good measure.
